A Flagstaff Literary Magazine

A Flagstaff Literary Magazine is an undergraduate-run publication that strives to challenge writers into breaking out of their comfort zone. Each edition is themed around a different, new, exciting, or under-appreciated genre. We accept experimental pieces that push the boundaries of conventional writing. We allow explorations in both fiction and poetry, as well as nonfiction should it apply to the current requirements. We look forward to helping you find your new favorite niche!

Submissions

Guidelines

General:

1. We are looking for writers who are willing to experiment in both form and genre while still providing memorable, fresh experiences.

2. Submissions must fit into each edition's theme/genre.

3. We require that all submissions be thoroughly proofread for spelling, grammar, and continuity errors.

4. Please only submit your own work. We will not accept any AI-written or plagiarized works.

5. We do not accept previously published pieces and we reserve the rights, should you be published, for a year's time.

6. We are willing to accept simultaneous submissions, granted they be removed if chosen by a different publication.

Fiction:

Please submit fiction from between 500-1500 words that fit into the edition's theme/genre. We highly encourage authors to submit flash fiction works as opposed to short stories.

We allow two flash fiction submissions from any one author per edition.

Poetry:

Please submit short-form poetry under 500 words that fit into the edition's theme/genre. We allow a  maximum of three poems to be submitted at a time. Long-form poems will count as a single submission.

Although we allow multiple submissions from one author, most often only one poem will be accepted at a time.

Nonfiction:

We most often accept nonfiction in the form of speculative nonfiction that fits into an edition's theme/genre. We accept nonfiction that is 2,000 words or less.

Nonfiction will not be included in every edition. If you have a piece that is on the fence regarding its fitting into the edition's theme/genre, please include a defense of your writing alongside your submission.

We allow one nonfiction submission from any one author per submission.

Art:

We accept local art for the cover of our magazine. We require artists to capture the theme/genre with their own interpretation.

Same as for written submissions, we do not accept plagiarized work or work produced by artificial intelligence.

Please include a brief description of the piece along with your submission.

How to Submit:

Please send submissions to:

aflagstaffliterarymagazine@gmail.com

The subject line should include the genre and title of your piece. If submitting more than one, simply include the number of submissions rather each title.

The body should include the name you wish to be published under, preferred point of contact, and if the piece is a simultaneous submission.

If you are submitting for more than one genre, please email those submissions separately.

This is a not-for-profit literary magazine, and we unfortunately cannot pay for pieces accepted into a given edition at this time.
